The kiwifruit disease PSA has been cited as one of the reasons why people are leaving the Bay of Plenty.
Statistics New Zealand figures show more than 1,300 people left the area during the financial year ending in 2011.
Andrew Coker, who's CEO of the Bay economic development agency, Priority One says local tradesmen are having to leave - with PSA playing a lead role.
He says the kiwifruit industry has been shaken by the disease, with many orchardists losing their livelihoods and having to find work elsewhere.
