Mum and son in court for abuse of wife

The High Court at Rotorua has heard of the abuse a Punjabi woman allegedly received from her husband and mother-in-law in Te Puke.

The woman's testified through an interpreter, telling of the beatings which started soon after she arrived from India with a dowry for the arranged marriage.

A 33-year-old kiwifruit worker - whose name's suppressed to protect his wife - is charged with two counts each of threatening to kill and raping her.

He's also accused of assaulting the woman - once with a knife - and three charges of sexual violation.

The Crown alleges she confronted him about a suspected affair, he grabbed a knife saying he was going to kill her and himself, before forcing sexual acts, injuring her.

The mother-in-law has pleaded not guilty to a joint charge with her son of attempting to procure an abortion by forcing her to take pills, being party to his assault, and another assault charge.

The offences allegedly occurred for more than a year over 2008 and 2009.
