Man avoids jail, but will be watched

A Whakatane man convicted of breaching a protection order will be closely monitored over the next year and a half.

Wayne Nepe was sentenced to 18 months intensive supervision when he appeared in the Whakatane District Court today.

Judge Louis Bidois told Nepe his history of violence can only be described as bad and if he doesn't get counseling he'll end up behind bars. 

Nepe was remanded on bail and is due back in court in June to be sentenced on one charge of assault with a weapon.
