Weed-free declaration for Lake Waikaremoana

Rosie Bay on the eastern side of Lake Waikaremoana is open for the first time in eight years this Easter.

The bay has been reopened to the public after being declared weed free.

Department of Conservation Aniwaniwa Area Manager Glenn Mitchell says being able to declare the bay free of Lagarosiphon major is a tribute to the persistence of Department of Conservation and Conservation Corps workers, and a warning of how easy it is for unwanted organisms to spread to remote areas.

He says their major concern is re-infestation could occur at anytime unless people take care to ensure vehicles, boats and equipment are completely weed free before they're taken into the lake.
