Maketu community impresses volunteers and whanau of boaties

The Maketu Surf life saving Club says it's impressed with the support its community offered to the whanau of the boaties who got lost at sea.

The five were found safe and well yesterday afternoon after a mammoth 28-hour search and rescue operation.

The boaties have spoken of their ordeal, saying they grabbed the wrong bucket instead of the one with extra lifejackets and emergency flares, and the on-board radio wasn't working.

Club President Mike Hickson says it was great to see such strong community involvement throughout the rescue.

He says the family was impressed with the support they were given and to those from Whakaue Marae bringing in blankets and pillows.

Mr Hickson says there were tears, laughs, clapping and plenty of hugs when whanau heard of the successful rescue.

Meanwhile,

Yesterday's rescue has prompted a reminder to boaties to stay put if they find themselves lost at sea.

Whakatane Coastguard Vice President John Ferguson says if a boat is in distress, the first step is to contact the Coastguard.

He says boats should always have a working VHF radio and flares onboard, and contact Coastguard before they go out and when they change position.

Mr Ferguson is urging boaties to also check the conditions before they go out.
