Mountain bikers from all over the North lsland have taken on the Whirinaki Forest Park.

230 riders took to the forest as part of the Whirinaki Quest, up from 150 entrants in last year's inaugural event.

Team N-Duro took a clean sweep of the male and female 40km options.

Race Director Nick Reader says it was truly adventurous quest for some riders, who missed a detour sign and ended up clambering over a giant fallen rimu tree sitting 7ft off the ground.

He says the event achieved a lot of its goals for Year Two, with more than 50 people choosing to camp in Minginui the night before the race.
