Runners and walkers from all over New Zealand have followed in the footsteps of Toi in one of the Eastern Bay's most popular endurance events.
More than 660 people took part in yesterday's Tois Challenge, making their way across the 18
.5km course between Whakatane and Ohope.
He says renowned pig-hunter Cliff Harper came to the rescue after one athlete broke her ankle in one of the bush sections, carrying her all the way to Otararwairere Bay where she was met by a Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Club rescue boat crew.
Galatea dairy farmer Sjors Corporaal took out this year's Challenge, finishing in 1hr17mins.
New records were set in the men's 50+ and 70+ categories.
Race manager Gavin Shadbolt says though there were several injuries sustained during the event, help was at hand.
