The region's young surf lifesavers have had a successful start to the season.
35 junior competitors from the Whakatane Surf Life Saving Club have returned from the season's first carnival at Waihi with 20 top-three finishes.
Jesse Wood took out the beach flags and Tayla Tulloch placed first in the run-swim-run, but the surprise of the day came from Kaiwhetu Kipa who won the board race ahead of her teammate.
Coach Grant Muru says she's put in a lot of work and it was a deserving win.
The Waihi carnival is seen as an important step towards the National Ocean Athletes competition in March.
