Eastern Bay police want the charges laid against a man for the Ruatoki bus crash to serve as a warning to other motorists.
In September, the 42-year-old logging truck driver failed to stop short of a bus, pulling over to let children off, and crashed into its rear.
16 were injured overall, ranging from minor to critical, which police say warranted the charges against the logger under the Land Transport Act 1998.
The charge carries a maximum five year prison sentence, and/or a fine of up to $20,000, plus loss of license.
Road Policing Manager for Bay of Plenty, Inspector Kevin Taylor says this was a serious incident affecting children.
He says this type of incident highlights why there is a need for vehicles to drive with care around buses.
He says the speed limit when passing a stationary school bus is 20 kilometres per hour.
Inspector Taylor says children are usually around buses, meaning motorists must be extra vigilant and aware.
The truck driver is to appear in Whakatane District Court on February 23.
