The Eastern Bay's green waste is being heralded as a way to increase the speed of restoration of the Whakatane Landfill.
The dump, which closed at the end of the year, is being restored to green pastures and then re-gifted back to Ngati Awa.
Whakatane District Council Works and Services Director Haydn Read says green pastures can be an innovative way to increase the speed it's restored.
He says using the green waste collection and moulching it into compost to use in the landfill, is a money-saver for the community.
