Eastern Bay resident launches nation wide petition

An Eastern Bay woman's taking action to prevent more children being killed, while getting on and off school buses.

Shannon Homewood's starting a nation-wide petition to change the law, in relation to safety precautions on school buses.

Her friend's son was killed in May last year after getting off a school bus, a year after another boy died in a similar accident.

In both the accidents, the vehicles were estimated by the Serious Crash Unit as doing between 44km/h and 70km/h.

Shannon Homewood says as it stands today, 20km/h is the speed limit past a stationary school bus, which drivers don't normally do anyway.

She hopes to get more than 300,000 signatures for the petition.
