Push for new political model

An Eastern Bay man wants to start a Referendum Society to improve living standards for Maori.

Matia Kohe aims to challenge the Maori Party at the 2011 general elections.

He's about to embark on an awareness campaign to find other people to support what he says will be a more democratic political system.

He says it's primarily for Maori, because they've been stigmatised and classified as being the underclass, and they represent a lot of the statistics for negative social issues.

Mr Kohe acknowledges it will be a struggle, but he believes with a concerted effort the living standards of Maori can be raised in the future.
