NIWA has confirmed what most Eastern Bay residents already suspect, August has gone down as one of the wettest on record.
The rainfall total, which resulted in yet more flooding for many residents, has more than doubled the monthly average.
Whakatane has experienced its second highest falls ever for August.
Georgina Griffiths from NIWA says Te Puke's rainfall topped previous figures.
She says Whakatane received 252mm in the month, which is the second highest since 1952, and only narrowly missed out on being the wettest area in the region.
Ms Griffiths says right across the Bay, between one and a half times and twice the normal rainfall's been recorded.
