Rena restoration plan announced

The Eastern Bay is set to be restored in the next year, following the Rena disaster.

A long term plan to restore the Bay has been announced in Tauranga.

Following the vessel stranding on the Astrolabe Reef, tonnes of oil and debris has been washing up along the region's coastlines.

The plan includes 44 actions which cover environmental issues relating to the sea bed, beaches and fisheries.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says government agencies, local councils and iwi have formed a group, to oversee the recovery.

He says it's likely to cost two to three million dollars and take up to 12 months - however that's only an estimate at this stage.

Dr Smith says progress on the clean up plan is to be reviewed later in the year to check it's all on track.

Local iwi want the area restored to pre Rena conditions.

The plan doesn't encompass the salvage of the wreck itself, which now sits in two pieces on the reef.
