Surf lifesavers flock to Ohope

Eastern Bay residents are encouraged to show their support to those who patrol our beaches and save lives.

The national Surf Lifesaving Championships kick off at Ohope Beach this morning, starting with the Masters events.

Whakatane Surf Lifesaving Club Spokesperson Christine Tulloch says the athletes competing are those keeping swimmers and water users safe.

She says they spend nine months every year, training for three major competitions, including the national championships.

Mrs Tulloch hopes members of the public will come to the beach to watch and support the athletes.
