Police target heavy trucks and drivers
Police in the Bay of Plenty will be targeting heavy trucks and their drivers as the summer holiday season approaches.
They're planning regular checkpoints and vehicle inspections throughout the region to make sure trucks are safe and up to standard.
Drivers will also be reminded to ensure they're well rested and take regular breaks on long trips.
The Head of the Region's Commercial Vehicle Unit, Acting Inspector Les Soepnel says weariness can set in at this time of the year and it's important for truck drivers especially to get plenty of sleep between shifts.
He says everyone deserves to get to their destination safely and decisions made by drivers can impact on everybody else on the road.
