Eastern Bay Teachers Strike

Many Eastern Bay primary schools will be closed today as teachers attend meetings to discuss the Government's most recent pay offer.

Some 30,000 teachers and principals around the country are expected to take part throughout the week as part of rolling strikes. Auckland teachers were out on the picket line yesterday, while today North Island teachers in Northland and between Auckland and Wellington are walking off the job.

Whakatane Secretary for the NZEI Vera Pawson says a meeting will take place at the Whakatane War Memorial Hall and members will march to the CBD at around midday.

She says teachers will also be protesting on several Whakatane roundabouts at key times throughout the day.

Ms Pawson says parents have had notice of the strikes for some time.
