Hundreds take part in strike

Over 250 Eastern Bay primary school teachers and principals took part in a regional strike yesterday, as rolling industrial action moves down the country.

Many local primary schools were closed, as teachers rallied at roundabouts at points throughout the day, attended a union meeting at the Whakatane War Memorial Hall and marched to the city centre at noon.

Vera Pawson, Secretary of the Whakatane Branch of the NZEI, says it was heartening to see and hear how much public support there was.

Ms Pawson says union members will be voting in coming weeks on whether to accept the Government's most recent pay offer.
