New tourist attraction at Awakeri
One of the outstanding issues delaying the development of a major new tourist attractions at Awakeri has been resolved.
Local man Barry Caulfield was given Whakatane District Council permission to buy the Awakeri Hall and turn it intro a tourist attraction including a vehicle museum, cafe and other features.
The proposal upset a number of hall users including the Awakeri Scouts who believed they would have nowhere to go if the sale went ahead.
Now Council Projects Committee Chairman Andrew Iles says a new home has been found for the Scouts at the Awakeri Primary School.
Mr Iles says the shift has been given the green light, though it's subject to consultation with the school.
He says the Council will have to meet the cost of the facility and the required consent.
