Early Christmas present for Whakatane Hospital Children's Ward

Sick Eastern Bay children at Whakatane Hospital are set to benefit from a purpose built playground thanks to a donation from the 2018 Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal.

The hospital was presented with a cheque for $35-thousand at the Whakatane Countdown store earlier this week. The annual appeal raised a total of $1.2 million for 21 children’s hospitals and wards across New Zealand.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the hospital, Children’s Ward Nurse Manager Sharon Powley said it’s a very generous donation and thanked everyone for their fundraising efforts.

“We’re very grateful especially for our sick children. It can be pretty tough for children to be sick in hospital, not only for them but also their whanau.

“We’ve also been planning to build an outdoor playground specifically for our sick children on the ward, allowing those that can, some play time as they get better. This donation will allow this to go ahead in the New Year.”

The Kids Hospital Appeal has raised a total of $12.8 million since it was launched in 2007.
