Mayor welcomes $1.4 billion road safety announcement

The Mayor of Whakatane has welcomed the 1.4 billion dollars being ploughed into making the country's roads safer.

The New Zealand Transport Agency is getting up to 700 million dollars from the Government towards making state highways safer.

And up to 800 million is being allocated to improvements to local roads.

Mayor Tony Bonne has welcomed news that Wainui Road between Ohope and Opotiki is included in the programme.

He says Wainui Road is long overdue for safety work over its entire length.
