Kiwi sculpture vandalised

A bronze kiwi statue, part of the new Kiwi Wandering Trail in Whakatane, has been damaged -- just a week after being installed.

Photos posted to Facebook show the beak of one of the statues at the Whakatane Heads bent over.

The photo combines with the comment "some lowlife has vandalised the kiwi sculpture already and bent the beak, makes me angry. Disgusting really.”

Kiwi Trust Chairman John Pullar says it may have been an accident, with reports kids were standing on the kiwi trying to take a photo before the beak bent.

But Mr Pullar says he doesn't condone this behaviour, and people need to be conscious of what they are.

The 10 life-size and life-like statues were installed around the heart of Whakatane on November 29th at a cost of five-thousand dollars each.
