Junior doctor's strike

Hundreds of Bay of Plenty residents will be affected by a 48-hour junior doctor's strike kicking off today.

100 elective surgeries and more than 500 outpatient appointments are being postponed at Tauranga and Whakatane Hospitals.

Mediation between the District Health Boards and the New Zealand Resident Doctors' Association last week failed to prevent the planned nationwide strike action.

The Association claims District Health Boards are pursuing claw backs in terms and provisions of the Multi-Employer Collective Agreement.

Whakatane Hospital Dr William Utley says the strike has been a long time coming.
