The Hikurangi zone and how it affects the Bay

The rupture of New Zealand's biggest fault line could mean dire news for the Bay of Plenty.

The Hikurangi subduction zone runs offshore from the east of Gisborne to the top of the south.

Scientists say its rupture would be capable of a devastating earthquake and tsunami.

Senior Emergency Management Advisor Rowan Wallace is one of many in a team that is developing an emergency response plan.

He says a rupture of the fault could be devastating for the region especially if a tsunami were to form.
