Meningococcal disease known the signs

We're being encouraged to look out for each other, and watch for the signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease.

The message comes after two Bay of Plenty people -- one from the Eastern Bay -- were admitted to hospital over the holiday period after being diagnosed with the disease.

Bay District Health Board Medical Officer Dr Jim Miller says as with most infections, good hygiene helps reduce the risk.

Signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease symptoms may include some or all of the following:
-high fever
-headache
-vomiting
-refusal of feeds (in infants)
-sleepiness
-a stiff neck
-dislike of bright lights
-joint and muscle pains
-a rash which looks like small or purple or red dots.

If you are concerned about a friend or family member and think their symptoms may be meningitis, seek the advice of a medical professional immediately.
