Follow the safety protocols message from Maritime Office
Those heading out on boats this summer are being reminded to follow the correct safety protocols.
Boaties are required to wear life jackets when crossing the river bar and phone before and after doing so.
Unfortunately at Ohiwa Harbour that hasn't been the case -- with some not following the rules.
Eastern Region Senior Maritime Officer Isaac Tate says there are consequences.
“90 per cent of our incidents happen within a mile offshore, and generally most accidents happen on a bar.
“It is by law that you must wear life jackets when crossing a bar, and if skippers don’t they can face a $200 fine.”
