Whakatane residents to continue conserving water
Residents are being asked to resume voluntary reductions efforts as the Whakatane River flow continues to drop.
Despite the flow rate steadily dropping, salt water intrusion hasn’t yet caused problems at the water treatment plant.
Whakatane Council says ‘king tides’ due this week could increase the chances of salt water intrusion.
In anticipation of this, its installing an upriver emergency intake, which will allow the district to continue extracting water for treatment from higher up stream, but at a lower than normal volume.
Council has thanked everyone who is voluntarily conserving water – it says keep up the good work and anticipate the dry weather to continue.
