Lucky escape after car hit by train

Occupants of a car that was ploughed into by a train near Pikowai have managed a lucky escape.

Emergency services were called to the crash around 12.30am yesterday following reports a train had crashed into a car on tracks near Pikowai Camp.

Matata Volunteer Fire Brigade Deputy Chief Mark Hofert says initial reports show the vehicle had become stuck on the tracks, likely by people attempting to access the beach.

He says the occupants of the vehicle had fled the scene when emergency services got there.
