Former Mayor Bob Byrne passes

A pillar of the community, a quiet philanthropist and a community man.

These are just some of the many ways former mayor Bob Byrne is being remembered, following the sad news of his passing.

Mr Byrne is remembered by many for his outstanding leadership during the Edgecumbe earthquake of 1987, along with outstanding support of many local clubs, organisations and initiatives.

Bob was a Councillor on the former Whakatāne Borough Council from 1971 till 1976, including three years as Deputy Mayor.

He also served as an elected member of the District Council from 1976 till 1989, the final three years as Mayor, following an earlier term as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Tony Bonne is passing on his sincere condolences, after receiving the news on Monday.

Flags at the Civic Centre will be flown at half mast for the entire week, honouring his life.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held in the Whakatane Baptist Centre, Keepa Road, Whakatane on Friday at 1pm.
