Police chase ends in crash

Police say they always face a difficult balance in protecting the public from dangerous driving behaviour and potentially causing the offender to take greater risks.

The comment follows a police chase near Taneatua yesterday when a motorist refused to stop for police concerned at his driving.

The pursued vehicle crashed into a truck on the Pekatahi Bridge and was then reversed into a police car.

The driver fled on foot but was caught nearby.

He was taken to Whakatane Hospital with minor injuries, and later discharged

Police say they always assess the risk of pursuing fleeing drivers and taken every decision very seriously.
