Dirty Waioeka Bridge sparks petition

"The Waioeka Bridge must be kept clean, its the gateway to our Opotiki community" -- that's the view of one local who's launched a petition to have it cleaned.

The move comes after residents and the Opotiki District Council expressed their disappointment over the state of the bridge.

The movement is aimed towards the New Zealand Transport Agency, who takes care of roading infrastructure nationwide.

Tania Te Whenua created the petition and says since 2014 people have been saying something needs to be done.

Opotiki's Deputy Mayor Lyn Riesterer says NZTA has offered no support to the township.

She says up until 2012, the maintenance of the bridge had been the responsibility of NZTA however this was removed and nothing has been done since.

To sign the petition head to the Opotiki Community Notices Facebook group.
