Police warn of new phone scam
Police are urging the public to be aware of a new sophisticated phone scam making the rounds.
A Gisborne woman received a call from a person claiming to be from the IRD, advising that she owed nine-thousand dollars and that there was a warrant to arrest for tax fraud.
The victim then received a call showing Gisborne Police as the caller ID and was transferred to a fake Sergeant called Nathan Shaw -- threatening to arrest her.
Fortunately she didn't fall for the scam, and reported it to Police.
Sergeant Rebecca Pepere says it is worrying the victim received a call showing Gisborne Police as the caller ID and investigations are now underway.
She says thankfully, the woman went about it the right way, alerting Police before transferring any money.
