Police warn of new phone scam

Police are urging the public to be aware of a new sophisticated phone scam making the rounds.

A Gisborne woman received a call from a person claiming to be from the IRD, advising that she owed nine-thousand dollars and that there was a warrant to arrest for tax fraud.

The victim then received a call showing Gisborne Police as the caller ID and was transferred to a fake Sergeant called Nathan Shaw -- threatening to arrest her.

Fortunately she didn't fall for the scam, and reported it to Police.

Sergeant Rebecca Pepere says it is worrying the victim received a call showing Gisborne Police as the caller ID and investigations are now underway.

She says thankfully, the woman went about it the right way, alerting Police before transferring any money.
