Tsunami Hikoi in Whakatane

As Tsunami Week celebrations launch across the country today --Whakatane is preparing to join in with it's first ever tsunami hikoi taking place later this week.

The hikoi, jointly organised by Whakatāne District Council and Emergency Management Bay of Plenty is being held on Wednesday through two sessions -- providing the option to participate at a time that suits.

Emergency Management Advisor Meagan Edhouse says it hopes to encourage people to prepare for evacuation to higher ground should natural signals occur-- such as a long or strong earthquake-- or a tsunami alert be given.
