Tsunami hikoi for Whakatane
Whakatane will be hosting it's first ever tsunami hikoi.
The action is intended to raise awareness and educate locals on ways to get prepared for a potential tsunami event.
Held on March 13th the hikoi will lead walkers on an evacuation route departing from Wharaurangi up the stairs on Canning Place, before ending at Wairere Reserve.
Whakatane Council Controller for Emergency Management Barbara Dempsey hopes the hikoi can act as an example for people's own personal evacuation plans.
