Farmer fined for over-irrigation of effluent

DairyNZ says the prosecution of a Waikato farmer sends a strong message to other farmers who let the side down.

It comes after a farmer was fined 131-840 dollars for over-irrigation of effluent, with DairyNZ supporting councils in making sure farmers meet their effluent obligations.

DairyNZ Chairman Jim van der Poel says any breach is one too many.

He says they support the Waikato Regional Council and other regional councils in monitoring and prosecuting farmers for serious infringements of the rules.

Meanwhile in the Bay of Plenty preventative measures by a farmer group called Project Rerewhakaaitu are working to produce farm environment plans to minimise pollution in waterways.
