Awanuiarangi CEO confident despite education reform

The Chief Executive of Te Whare Wananga o Awanuiarangi is not concerned at changes the government's planning to schools, polytechnics and industry training organisations.

The Government, in it’s Tomorrow’s School review, believes they're no longer fit for purpose, however it's not yet reviewing the role of the country's three wanangas.

Wiremu Doherty says the institute should be fine if they keep their focus

“I think with change everyone’s nervous, and if we keep our students at the focus of all our decision we will do okay.”

Submissions have already closed on some of the proposals, with changes set to take effect at the start of next year.

Mr Doherty says while the proposals may be sweeping, some change is necessary.

“In general, people across the sector are relatively comfortable with the notion of change. We agree change was imminent and most of the nervousness that remains is the rate of that change.”
