Tourist dies from injuries following fall at Moutohorā Island

A tourist has died following an incident at Moutohorā Island, last week.

In a statement released by White Island Tours, Chairman Paul Quinn says the incident took place on Thursday during a guided tour of Whale Island.

He says a tourist fell during the tour and was seriously injured. First aid was immediately provided and emergency services were called.

The Trustpower TECT rescue helicopter attended and the injured person was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital but subsequently passed away on Friday.

WorkSafe and the Department of Conservation which administers Moutohora Island and its tracks, are both conducting investigations into the incident.

Mr Quinn says the entire White Island Tours team is deeply saddened and devastated by the incident.

“We are looking to see what support we can provide to them at this very difficult time” says Mr Quinn.

He says White Island Tours are co-operating fully with both investigations, and will participate in any coronial enquiry, if and when that occurs.

All tour operations have been suspended while the investigations are ongoing.

“Until the Worksafe and DOC investigations are complete, we are unfortunately not able to make any further public comment on the incident,” says Mr Quinn.
