Cannabis referendum needs to be more than yes or no - Tanczos
Kiwis should be clear on the issues around next year's cannabis referendum, according to former Green MP Nandor Tanczos.
Mr Tanczos, who is now a Whakatane District Councillor, has welcomed the Justice Minister's release of the draft cannabis referendum.
It includes details of the suggested legislation.
Nandor says its important that people understand what's being proposed.
“People want to know what they’re voting on, so the Government has said they’re going to have a fully drafted bill, so people can see what they’re voting on. That’s good.”
He’s pleased the Green party has made progress on the issue.
“I don’t think it would’ve happened without the Greens, it’s part of their Coalition agreement and it’s good to see them sticking to their guns.
“But I think credit needs to be given to Andrew Little whose taken it on and done some really good thinking around it — that’s really positive.”
He says everyone needs to take the referendum seriously.
“I just hope we don’t see politicians being silly about it. We’re already starting to see some of that, including misinformation and muddling-of-water, but it’s really important to have a mature debate about it.”
He says we have people dying from prohibition violence currently in our country.
