Night time dip triggers call out from Matata brigade
Matata fire fighters were called out shortly after midnight on Friday night after a swimmer was reported in difficulties.
The emergency call was made from a beach-side park near Matata.
The Matata volunteer brigade arrived and found a young person who'd been in the sea for a swim and was suffering from severe hypothermia.
Friends dried the victim and wrapped them up and used body heat to keep the person warm.
Fire fighters put a thermal blanket over the victim who was then taken to Whakatane Hospital for a check-up.
