Users of the Whakatane Library and Exhibition Centre will continue to be able to use it during winter on Sundays.

The district council has turned down a recommendation from its Projects and Services Committee to close Te Koputu on Sundays from June until September.

That was the course of action followed last winter and staff wanted it to continue in the future.

But Mayor Tony Bonne says the full council has decided the centre should stay open seven days a week, year-round.

He says it came to a close vote.

“In all my career I haven’t used my casting vote, and I didn’t want to start now. So we put it to the status quo and that was to keep the Library and Exhibition centre open seven days a week, year round.”
