Eastern Bay teachers gearing up for mega-strike

Mounting frustration with the government is prompting thousands of Eastern Bay teachers to go on strike tomorrow.

All primary, intermediate, area school and secondary school staff will stay away tomorrow.

It's expected to lead to the closure of most schools but some may be open to look after children.

In Whakatane teachers will stage a mass protest at the Landing Road Bridge at eight tomorrow morning.

Primary teachers spokesperson Peter Fitzgerald says teachers have had enough.

"The Government has done nothing to alleviate staffing crises in schools, trying to retain teachers in school or bring back those who have left teaching."

He says they'll be taking two courses of action tomorrow.

"There will be a joint protest between NZEI and primary and secondary teachers at Whakatane Landing Road Bridge from 8am.

"NZEI will also be hosting a mass rally at 11.30 in Rotorua."
