Eastern Bay teachers join strike action

Teachers are massing at the Landing Road Bridge in Whakatane this morning as they join a national one-day strike.

It's the first time secondary teachers have joined their primary, intermediate and area school colleagues in strike action.

It's over a lack of progress in contract talks, with the teachers insisting classroom conditions are just as or more important than actual pay rises.

After gathering at the Landing Road Bridge from about eight this morning, Eastern Bay teachers will go to Rotorua for a mass rally at 11.30.

Throughout the Bay of Plenty 148 schools will be closed today.
