Police have appealed to Bay of Plenty motorists to take care on the roads during Queens Birthday Weekend.

Bay of Plenty Road Policing Manager Inspector Brent Crowe says in the first five months this year 39 people have died on the region's roads.

Numerous others have been seriously injured, resulting in famliies and friends enduring a lot of heartache and suffering.

Inspector Crowe says this Queens Birthday Weekend police will have an increased presence on the roads monitoring driver behaviour and taking action to prevent crashes.

He says motorists can expect to see the police on local roads and if their driving is poor they will be stopped.
