Ohope Beach rated second-best by US travel site
An American travel site rates Ohope beach as New Zealand's second best.
Travel site Fodor set out to find this country's top ten beaches, concluding that we're spoiled for choice.
Fodor puts Waihi Beach in the Bay of Plenty in first place, saying its nine-kilometre stretch of sand is perfect for safe surfing, swimming and long walks, and there are even some cycle tacks.
Ohope came in second, assessed as also a safe bet for surfing swimming, cycling, and if you're feeling adventurous, exploring by boat.
Fodor notes that Ohope's water also tends to be warmer than the sub-Antarctic temperatures found at other New Zealand beaches.
Karekare in Auckland was ranked third, with 90-mile Beach, Doubtless Bay, New Plymouth's Fitzroy Beach and Raglan filling fourth to seventh places.
