Eastern Bay teachers celebrating latest offer
Teachers in the Eastern Bay are celebrating the likely end of their pay dispute with the Government.
The two teacher unions, the NZEI and the PPTA reached agreement in principle with the Government yesterday on a new pay deal.
The government previously said 1.2 billion dollars was its best offer for teachers, but has now added an extra 271 million.
Eastern Bay primary teachers spokesperson Peter Fitzgerald says it's welcome news.
“The staff room this morning was full of a lot of excited people as they read the announcement on the offer.
”Everything on the workload issues and extra release days are all in there, and I think it’s a good step forward.”
He says he's not sure how the government has found the extra money.
“I don’t know where it came from, originally they offered teachers a one-off payment of 500 and now that’s up to 1500. They’ve done really well.”
The NZEI and PPTA will now refer the offer to members for a vote next week.
