Two killed in Pongakawa train crash
There's been another bad rail crash on the railway line north of Matata.
Two people died and several others were trapped and seriously injured in a collision between a car and a train at Pongakawa.
It happened on Pongakawa School Road off State Highway 2 about quarter past eight this morning.
SunLive photographer and videographer Daniel Hines is at the scene and says traffic is now being diverted.
“Police are on the intersection of Pongakawa School Road, diverting traffic down Old Coach Road.
“Multiple ambulances can be seen, along with police and there are two rescue helicopters on scene at the moment.”
Police say the serious crash unit is investigating.
In April four people were injured, one critically, when a car and train collided at the Duncan Lane level crossing near the Pukehina turn-off.
