The Whakatane, Maketu and Tauranga coastguards all joined forces to carry out a tricky rescue off White Island yesterday.

The stricken vessel was safely towed back to Tauranga well after dark.

The drama began when a large launch radioed for help around four yesterday afternoon.

President Shane Beech says the Maketu Coastguard was first to swing into action.

He says because of the sheer distance a combined effort was needed to get the vessel back to Tauranga, before the conditions became unbearable.
