Further shakes felt across the Eastern Bay
About two dozen earthquakes have been recorded in the Whakatane area last night and this morning.
Most are minor but several have been felt as a sharp jolt.
GNS Science has received hundreds of felt reports from Eastern Bay residents.
There were about five quakes between 9.15 and 9.45 last night, and then a batch of about 20 from 8.13 this morning onwards.
GNS Science duty seismologist Lara Bland says they can be correctly be termed a swarm.
Lara says there's no suggestion of anything more serious, but GNS is monitoring the situation closely.
