Winter ailments contributing to spike in ED patient numbers
A ‘significant spike’ in patient numbers at Whakatane Hospital's Emergency Department is being owed to winter ailments.
Whakataneāne Hospital ED Clinical Lead Tamsin Davies says over recent weeks the department has hit the 100-patient mark on some days.
This is compared to the average daily figure of 60 in 2018.
She says winter-type ailments are not only impacting on patient numbers but also mean a lot of hospital staff are off work sick.
Ms Davies now calling for those who do not need emergency treatment to keep the department for those that do.
Tauranga Hospital is also facing similar issues.
On Monday last week more than 200 patients passed through the department's doors in a 24 hour period.
