White Island alert level lowered
The unrest at Whakaari White Island is beginning to ease.
Last week the Volcanic Alert Level was raised to two, and the aviation warning was lifted from green to orange.
However during the weekend, GNS Science performed two additional gas flights.
These showed lower gas emissions than recorded and a lower level of activity than last reported.
New measurements made on the island also show no change in fumarole temperature and suggest the small signal recorded is likely to be related to the nearby ongoing swarm of tectonic earthquakes, rather than an increase in volcanic activity.
As a result, the Volcanic Alert Level has been lowered from two to one. There is no change in the Aviation Colour Code
GNS Science will continue to monitor the island.
Further gas measurements will be undertaken again as soon as conditions allow.
